നിലാവില്‍ ആമയിഴഞ്ചാന്‍ തോടിന്റെ കരയില്‍ നക്ഷത്രം എണ്ണി കിടന്നവന് ഒരു വെളിപാടുണ്ടാകുന്നു ... എന്താ?... പേട്ട പാളയം സ്ടാച്യു വഴി പ്രസ്‌ ക്ലബിലേക്ക്‌ വച്ചു പിടിക്കാന്‍... എന്തിനാ??... ജേര്‍ണലിസം പഠിക്കണം!
പ്രസ്‌ ക്ലബ്‌....
ജേര്‍ണലിസത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അറിയാന്‍ ചെന്നുപെട്ടത് ഒരു സിങ്കത്തിന്റെ മടയില്‍....ഉസ്താദ് എന്‍. ആര്‍. എസ്. ബാബു സര്‍.
സര്‍ ആള്‍ കിടിലമാ... എന്താ സംഭവം? നല്ല A - Class ജേര്‍ണലിസം.
ആവശ്യം അറിയിച്ചു. ദക്ഷിണയായി സര്‍ ചോദിച്ചത് "മാതൃഭൂമിയുടെ സ്ഥാപകനാര് ?" എന്ന്. ഊരുതെണ്ടിയുടെ ഓട്ടബുദ്ധിയില്‍ എന്താ ഉള്ളത്??.... ഒന്നുമില്ല... ജേര്‍ണലിസത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യാക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ പഠിപ്പിച്ച 'മുത്തുച്ചിപ്പി'യുടെ എഡിറ്ററെ മനസ്സില്‍ ധ്യാനിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ അങ്ങട് അലക്കി - "മാമന്‍ മാപ്പിള്ള!!"
പറഞ്ഞു മുഴുമിക്കാന്‍ വിട്ടില്ല. ഇങ്ങനെ അങ്ങട് ചേര്‍ത്ത് അങ്ങട് പിടിച്ചു. "നീ ഇവിടെ ഒന്നും ജനിക്കേണ്ടവനല്ല. In fact, നീ ജനിക്കേണ്ടവനേ അല്ല!!"

പിന്നെ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ ജേര്‍ണലിസവും സിരകളില്‍ ലഹരിയുമായി കാലം ഒരു പാട്....
ഒടുവില്‍ ഒരു നാള്‍ പ്രസ്‌ ക്ലബ്ബിന്റെ പടിയില്‍ ഒരു പിടി പച്ച മണ്ണും വാരിയിട്ടു യാത്ര തുടങ്ങി... ജോലി അന്വേഷിച്ച്... ഇന്നും തീരാത്ത യാത്ര...

Gerald Posner resignation

Gerald Posner, a noted writer and journalist, resigned from the newspaper he was working for - Daily Beast - on allegations of plagiarism. He published his views on the issue in his blog where he expresses regret for the inadvertent mistakes he made. I think this is an important letter to be read by every journalist, especially in the age of the New Media.
Some excerpts:
"I realize how it is that I have inadvertently, but repeatedly, violated my own high standards. The core of my problem was in shifting from that of a book writer – with two years or more on a project – to what I describe as the “warp speed of the net.” For the Beast articles, I created master electronic files, which contained all the information I developed about a topic – that included interviews, scanned documents, published articles, and public information. I often had master files that were 15,000 words, that needed to be cut into a story of 1,000 to 1500 words.
In the compressed deadlines of the Beast, it now seems certain that those master file were a recipe for disaster for me. It allowed already published sources to get through to a number of my final and in the quick turnaround I then obviously lost sight of the fact that it belonged to a published source instead of being something I wrote."

Thanks to everyone
I had been waiting a week to wake up from the dream. The dream that I won the first rank in Press Club. It had felt so good I didn't want the dream to end. I have never so felt so good. This was not like any other course or class. Here was the best of teachers and the best of peers.
And now a week has passed. No one has woke me up. No corrections have come in the newspapers.
Could this be true?
I was always the absentee student. Classmates liked me like they liked Maveli or Santa Claus. Came along once in a while. Had a good time and left.
Here I am telling myself again and again - it is true!
My heartfelt thanks to all our teachers who taught us what they knew (or atleast tried to).
But most of all to myclassmates and friends. I know (and you know) that this wouldn't have been possible without you - all of you. You gave me notes, encouragement, syllabus, reminders to assignment deadlines and what not. Our batch (evening batch) was the best here in ages.
I don't want to sound pretentious or cliched but - I dedicate my 'victory' to all my classmates - my friends who have always helped me.
This honour truly belongs to you.
