Modern trends violating ethics
The front page editorial titled “neethidevathayude mudapetta kannukalude sukam” published by the “kerala kaumudi” news paper on 18/12/2008 was a misleading distorted material. “kerala kaumudi” has no right to degrade any of the Judicial proceedings or publish anything that brings down the image of the Judiciary in the public.It is absolutely unethical and clear violation of law.such tendencies cannot be glorified.Media should avoid questioning Judiciary for mere sensationalism.
Tidy City initiative
There is a clean city initiative taken up by a few people in the Trivandrum city. Activities of the initiative are written about in the blog http://tidycity.org/blog
They are planning a museum clean up this Sunday, as one of the first actions. 'They' includes the author of this post as well :-)
The museum clean up is to happen on Sunday, February 1st around 4 pm in the afternoon. A clean city is one we all argue about, and think we can do nothing about. To prove this wrong, to prove that there is a part each individual plays - is one of the firt messages that the initiative tries to drive across. We cant force others to clean up, but we can try to inspire them. We can make them think before they throw something on the streets the next time. Thats a lot.
Everyone is welcome to join the cause. Those who are interested can comment in the tidycity blog and make their voices heard.

Slumdog Millionaire at your door step
After winning 4 Golden Globes. Another 31 wins & 37 nominations Slumdog Millionaire is here in our city .The movie is worth watching.At the beginning you may feel that the movie is the same old story of showing india in the bad light.But as the film moves on it changes and concentrates on the life of the protagoinist.Rehman's background score is brilliant and may fetch him an oscar.The movie is technically so perfect that you won't feel bored for a single moment.
The song Jai Ho is at the end of the movie which is coreographed in usual bollywood style.Better than the music score for this song Rehman did a very good job with BG score,I wish him all the best.

UFO,What is it?
Those who have watched any movie in Anjali or Athulya might have come across UFO that appears in the screen in the beginning and at the time of interval of a movie.UFO is a satellite movie distributor across India with headquarters at Mumbai.UFO Moviez is the Digital Cinema venture of UFO Moviez India limited.Digital Cinema is a new concept of exhibiting and distributing movies. It uses Digital Media (fibre optics, satellite transmission, hard disks) instead of analogue media (Prints) to record, transmit and replay images. Digital Cinema uses digital projectors instead of analogue projectors. It can store, transmit, retrieve and replay a huge amount of information exactly as it was originally recorded. There is more flexibility in Digital Cinema as the data can be manipulated at low cost and effectively.
How it works?
There are three steps involved in the distribution of a satelite movie.It includes 1,TELECINE
2,DIGITIZATION (Encoding & Encryption)
and 3,DELIVERY OF FILMS
1.TELECINE
The telecine process involves transferring of video and audio from the print (positive OR negative) to Hi-definition standard on Magnetic Media tapes (D5). This process gives best results if it is done with the negative of the film. Telecine is done at the Famous Studios Telecine facility using High Definition Spirit Telecine machine and the data is transferred onto D5 tape.The DaVinci color correction machine is used to carry out scene wise color correctionThis process facilitates all types of audio conversion (i.e. mono, stereo, 5.1 Dolby / DTS.)
2.DIGITIZATION
The digitization process provides the facility of capturing the content, encoding, encryption and quality check.The D5 output is captured into MOV File. There are three capture stations used including one for standby. Each capture station has the capacity to store data up to 1.5 Terabyte. The capture and the conversion is done in realtime.These MOV movie files are then encoded in MPEG 4 format, for which eight encoders are used. Using multiple encoders, the encoding is also achieved in real time.The movie now in a compressed MPEG 4 format is encrypted frame by frame in a cine processor and stored in a NFS server in an encrypted format.
3.Delivary of the films
After the quality check the movie is transferred into a storage device called network file server (NFS).This is the storage facility for all encrypted movies. This storage facility is configured in RAID and stored onto a secured private network.At the time of the release, the movie is transferred from the NFS Server to the cinecaster at the satellite hub station. The Cinecaster is located into HECL VSAT hub at Gurgaon and the movie is transferred form NFS to Cinecaster using high speed link.The movie is then transmitted to the theaters over a VSAT link
This movie in the encrypted format is also copied onto a USB hard drive at the local Regional UFO office as a backup, to be delivered to theaters physically incase there is a failure in delivery of the film via satellite due totechnical issues.Movies stored in the cineblaster cannot be played out by the cinema owner unless an online license is defined by the producer / distributor
In Thiruvananthapuram district seven theaters uses UFO for movie screening.

Kerala Kaumudi gets it; when is our turn?
Even as Joe Sir taught us about legal proprietaries that media persons had to worry about, there comes the Kerala Kaumudi case. Yeah, everyone else do it, so I can do it too – we think. But Joe Sir was right when he said you maybe the unlucky one who gets caught and has to face the penalties, when others may while away and drink their coffees. Ok he didnt say about drinking coffee, thats my addition. But thats what happens isnt it?
All papers have been carrying various stories about Abhaya case for the past few months. Unfortunately for Kerala Kaumudi, one of their articles was read by someone at the High Court, and bang came the court case. I dont mean to justify them. I was just wondering how coincidental it was that this happened right after that class we had.
And so many of us just take pictures from the net without a second thought. Imagine having to enter a court for that – years after years! Problem is if something like what happened to our teacher occurs – well whats the guarantee we will even realize something was wrong – I mean an advertisement on the page carrying a wrong map! The song of sparrows
Majid majidi’s film ‘the song of sparrows’ is set against the backdrop of a remote world,that depicts the life of innumerous multitudes seen around us,their quest for survival and the chaos and confusions of their daily life.the story encompasses the simplicity of human life.As the film unveils itself the protagonist karim who works in an ostrich farm is portrayed as a man devoid of any urban trivialities. He leads an appreciable life by maintaining his family ties.The film makes it clear that hardships of life solidifies human relationships.the film instills hope on the common man who is caught amongst the forces of society he lives in.
The crisises they confronts makes the endurance more and more hazardous.the story proceeds through several incidents.karim’s wife tries hard to meet the ends of life. His elder daughter becomes partially deaf as her hearing aid gets damaged.karim’s faces dire consequences as he losts his job. He tries to seek out his livelihood in the big town where he is mistaken as a two-wheeler taxi-driver.karim gets immersed in the busting urban world,which gradually transforms the otherwise pious nature of karim. He loses his innocence.Majid majidi’s has always proved his mettle in portraying the psyche of children (eg:the children of heaven). In this film he introduces a group of kids whose fervent wish is to make a fish tank.children defies elders to fulfill their dream. Though initially karim forbids his son,later he understands them. Karim gradually understands life through the children.Here the personal experience is broadened into something impersonal.Though their dreams shatter ,children retains their hope through a single fish,with a sort of innocent faith that only children could possess.The song of sparrows through its lucid style makes it evident that an excellent film can converse effortlessly. Though the film basically reflects the frets and frails of ordinary naïve man ,it also deals with comparitively grave topics like acute unemployment,impacts of urbanized globalization,the state of poor in our society and the way their dreams are conditioned.
The day of reckoning …WE NEED A WAR
Even while power hungry politicians are screaming for strong action against Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, social workers and the media have been cautioning against escalating the tension that could lead to war. But the fact is…we need a war!! No this is not anti-Pakistan or anti-Islam sentiment speaking, but my crystal-clear, rational mind. For heavens sake we need a war. Look around you, the corrupt politicians, the lazy bureaucrats – I tell you we need a war. If not against Pakistan, then we could fight America or bomb China or maybe even Scotland (I hear they are fierce warriors). We need a violent shake up. The strongest empires are those that were built on violence and washed with centuries of blood.

Israel is bombing Palestine; in Sri Lanka the lions are fighting the tigers. What is the use of standing mutely? I mean the terrorists, from Pakistan, keep hitting us at regular intervals and all we do is express anguish, pain, protest, renounce, threaten, etc, etc. and then we get hit again. It’s not going to stop. So will a war bring peace? Maybe not. But then what difference will it make. Let everyone take up arms – let’s fight, lets spill some blood and guts. Maybe we will win and maybe we will lose. Its not about winning or losing. Its about living, and dying, with honour.

Herbert Marshall McLuhan, C.C. (July 21, 1911 – December 31, 1980) was a Canadian educator, philosopher, and scholar — a professor of English literature, a literary critic, a rhetorician, and a communications theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory.
McLuhan is known for the expressions "the medium is the message" and "global village". McLuhan was a fixture in media discourse from the late 1960s to his death and he continues to be an influential and controversial figure. More than ten years after his death he was named the "patron saint" of Wired magazine.

New Year Resolutions
Finally...my new year resolutions. [Statutory Warning: i am just following a tradition and have absolutely no intention of following any of them.] So here goes:
1. Stop sleeping in office: Now that's easy. Pull out the air condition plug. no AC - hard to sleep. Last year my boss fell asleep trying to wake me up. It affects work - I mean his work.
2. Save money: Last week I opened my 6th bank account - and quickly withdrew all the money so it shows the same balance as the other five - zero.By the end of this year i'm going to have 6-digit figures in all of them.(This one has been on my list for the past 6 years)
3. Wear clean clothes: Since i'm a very, very handsome guy (naturally) a lot of people have commented on my dislike of personal hygiene. This year i'll wear only washed, ironed clothes - only branded ones (no more 3 shirts for Rs. 50).
4. Say "sorry": Learn to apologise. I mean, at present alsoI use the word but then i trip him down the stairs and then say sorry again. its more fun that way. (also take down their photos from the dart board).
5. Stop partying: that's the hardest one. i'm not going to any more rave, booze, beer, etc parties. I find that whenever i have a beer my bike also goes and gets drunk and it keeps falling down all the way home. I think if i quit maybe my bike will also quit.
There are plenty more to add but i guess thinking about these should keep me busy till December!!
