Visually impaired shows the way to politicians

SURAT: Rambhai Patel does not wear khadi. He has no political
connection and has never contested an election. But, on May 16,
Rambhai, a visually
impaired retired telephone operator in Valsad achieved something that
is the envy of seasoned politicians - he polled 27,429 votes as an
Independent in the Lok Sabha elections.

Yet, fighting elections was not something Rambhai had dreamt of. "I
wanted to teach politicians a lesson, show them that elections are not
won by money, muscle and liquor power, but by good work and commitment
to the people. I cannot see the world, but I decided to open the eyes
of politicians who are blind to the ills plaguing our country," says
59-year-old Rambhai, who retired from the Valsad District Co-operative
Bank last year.

Rambhai, who contested the Valsad seat, gave a tough fight to BJP's
Dhiru Patel and Congress' Kishan Patel, who won by a margin of 7,169
votes, and keeping an age-old tradition alive -- whichever party wins
Valsad seat, forms the government at the Centre.

People say it is social work that got him this astounding number. An
honorary general secretary of the National Association for the Blind
in Valsad district, has rehabilitated more than 600 blind boys and
girls who are employed with various organisations across the country.

Rambhai says most of his votes came from tribal villages in Dharampur,
Pardi, Vansda and Valsad town. It's in these areas where Rambhai has
philanthropic work, helping tribal students and people in the field of
education and health.

Rambhai, whose daughter is an engineer with an MNC in Mumbai and son
studying in MS University in Vadodara, is upbeat about politics and is
already planning to contest again in 2014. "People have reposed faith
in me and I am happy," says Rambhai. Though he is being both by the
Congress and BJP to join, Rambhai says he is happy keeping away from
political parties.

അസ്ഥിര മുന്നണി എന്ന ചീത്ത പേര് മുന്നാം മുന്നണിക്ക്‌ നേരത്തെ ഉണ്ടെകിലും ജനം എന്തുകൊണ്ട് അവരെ പാടെ അവഗണിച്ചു. മുന്നാം മുന്നണിയിലെ പ്രമുഘരായ സി.പി .എമ്മിന് എവിടയാണ് പിഴച്ചത്.തങ്ങളുടെ ഉരുക്ക് കോട്ടയായ ബെന്ങലുപോലും അവരെ കൈവിട്ടു.തത്വതിഷ്ടിത നിലപാടുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് കാല്‍ക്കുലേറ്റര്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലേക്ക് സി. പി.എം ചുവടു മാറ്റി എന്ന് ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌ തോന്നി തുടങ്ങിയോ.വര്‍ഗീയവാതികള്‍ എന്ന് തങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ ഒരിക്കല്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ച പി.ഡി. പി യെ കൂടെ കുട്ടിയതും , കാര്‍ഷിക വല്‍കരണത്തെ മറന്നുകൊണ്ട് കാര്‍ഷിക ഭൂമിയുടെ നെഞ്ചില്‍ വ്യവസായ വല്‍കരനതിന്നു ശ്രമിച്ചതും പട്ടിണി കിടന്നു പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തെ വളര്‍ത്തിയ കര്‍ഷകരുടെ നെഞ്ജിലേക്ക് വെടിയു‌ണ്ട പായിച്ചപ്പോഴും അവര്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു.പിന്നെ മറ്റൊരു മുഖ്യ കാരണം ചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ഇന്ന് വരെ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ്‌ പാര്‍ടിയില്‍ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്ന വിഭാഗീയത ."ശത്രുവിന്റെ ശത്രു മിത്രം" എന്ന ഫോര്‍മുലയാണ് ബെന്ങാളില്‍ പാര്‍ട്ടിക്ക് തിരിച്ചടിയയതെങ്കില്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ തോല്‍വിയെ കുറിച്ച് എന്തുന്യായമാണ് പറയാനാവുക.

Let History Judge Him

Another living legend is dead. Velupillai Prabhakaran. The name of terror that we grew up with. We were taught that he was a soldier, a brother, a leader. Then we were taught that he was a terrorist, a brute, a megalomaniac who loved to kill.

He stood up against the atrocities committed against the poorest of Tamils who had migrated to Sri Lanka to work in the plantations there. He took up arms when Tamilians were burnt alive in the streets of Colombo. He struck back when Sinhalese mobs dragged out and lynched Tamilians even from prisons. He became the beacon of hope for a people who were treated as sub –humans by the Sri Lankans.

He killed his own people who did not obey him. He rose to power by exterminating other Tamil leaders. He built one of the most ferocious organizations ever in the world -the LTTE. He was the founder of suicide attacks. Most countries even now classify LTTE as more dangerous than Al Qaeda as it is clear that Osama Bin Laden copied most of his terrorist actions from Prabhakaran. He is the only leader to have assassinated two world leaders in two different countries.

If he was a devil, was it because he had lived in hell?

Even as debates rage on who he really was and what effect his actions will have on future generations, the truth is that no one could ignore him. You had to stand for or against him.

Even as his bullet-ridden body is being identified, let us not be his judges; for only time shall tell whether his actions were right or wrong, whether he shall find his place among the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln or the likes of Hitler and Mussolini.

Let history be his judge.

Half-full. Definitely

So the elections are over. The UPA has been voted back to power. In Kerala the UDF has scored a thumping victory over the LDF.

My opinion of the election? Perfect.

No matter what the critics or detractors say, the fact that the election process was completed without any notable glitches is an achievement in itself. The election process in India is the largest of any kind in the whole world. We are the largest democracy in the world and we have proved it to the world once again. Ignore the minor setbacks. We are still a fledgling nation just 60 years old. Compare that to the US which is 400 years old. Compare ourselves to the rest of the Third World countries – the Latin American countries, the African countries or even our neighbours like Pakistan, SriLanka, Nepal or Burma. The people who come to power here are the ones we elect to rule. Not military dictators or not puppet ministries (atleast not overtly).

Drawbacks? Definitely. 200 of our selected MP’s have criminal records. In a country where less than 2% of the population are millionaires, we have elected 200 MP’s who are crorepatis. And much more.

But still if you ask me if the glass is half-full or half-empty,I’d say it is definitely half-full.
